Mainlining Go With The Flow of Savings via Pipe Rehabilitation vs. Total Replacement

The deterioration by corrosion of unlined water transmission and distribution system piping can cause a variety of problems including:

  • heavy tuberculation
  • discolored water
  • capacity and pressure loss
  • increased pumping costs
  • undesirable taste
  • water leakage and burst mains
  • inadequate water supply for fire protection
  • increased maintenance costs.

The above photo shows the tubercules that have developed in the corrosive process and the amount of blockage that results. The photo at right shows how the Perkins Process gives that same pipe a "new pipe" appearance.

More significantly, however, water quality can be seriously affected to the point that health concerns arise. Irregular surface conditions caused by deposits of corrosion create an inability for disinfectants to reach bacteria systems.

The corrosion process causes pits in the interior of the pipe from the material that is being removed. Tubercules gradually form over these pits, reducing the hydraulic carrying capacity of a water transmission and distribution system. This corroded material, combined with mineral deposits, is known as tuberculation.

While the rate and degree of tuberculation varies with the aggressiveness of water, the application of a cement mortar lining after cleaning has proven to be the only totally effective way to prevent retuberculation, providing permanent protection against interior corrosion.

Mainlining's "Perkins Process" provides a trenchless method of in-place cleaning and cement mortar lining that permanently restores full hydraulic a fraction of the cost of total pipe replacement. It prevents further interior tuberculation and corrosion while blocking leakage through holes in pipe walls and joints.

This cost-effective approach provides both chemical and physical protection. The cement lining can be applied to any pipeline materials (cast iron, steel, etc.) and can be installed with minimal interuption of water service to consumers.
